Thanks to a generous donation, Pacific Traditions Society has contracted with Oceans People to build a 38' proa as an all-seasons support/service vessel for Vaka Valo Association of Taumako. The "S.V. Lata" will be used as escort to students at sea on traditional vessels, as transport and cargo vessel for hire, and for commercial fishing. Profits will pay costs of vessel maintenance and Lata Voyaging School programs. 2 years is the timeline for construction to delivery at Taumako. We now fundraise to equip the vessel and crew. Here are Tim Mann's preliminary drawings. See more about Oceans People at https://oceanpeople.org , and their point of view about building Lata" on https://oceanpeople.org/taumako/
Construction of the this proa for Vaka Valo Association was suddenly paused because of COVID19 issues. Tomorrow Oceans People of Honokaʻa, Hawaiʻi Island begin cutting the frames. We will post photos and news of progress.
